The origins of the gambeson can be traced back to ancient times, with similar padded garments used by various civilizations for protection in combat. However, its widespread use in medieval Europe began around the 12th century. The gambeson, also called aketon, padded jack or arming doublet, is a quilted, padded garment which was usually worn underneath plate and chainmail armours. It made these steel armours more comfortable to wear and could absorb enemy blows, thus reducing the risk of injury. This beautifully made gambeson by Ulfberth comprises of four layers of fabric: one outer layer made from cotton canvas along with two layers of woolen padding and one soft layer of cotton lining. Perfect for Autumn/winter time.
